Capstone Project

Final Year Project on a VR Flood Simulator.

Contributions

Notable contributions towards the Overflow project

Contribution

Cutscenes

In this VR Project, I was in charge of handling the cutscenes within the game. A total of 3 cutscenes; introduction, middle and ending. As the visualiser, I tried to evoke emotions of the flood situation through storytelling of a fictional character to connect with the audiences.

Going through process such as planning, drafting, sketching, finalising art, animating and finally sound designing. The story is about a fictional boy who loves his computer. Upon receiving the news from his mother to react to the emergency, he proceeds to learn that his house was affected by flood too.  In the middle, he tries to rescue all his belongings. However, he slips while holding onto his PC and destroyed his most beloved belonging. Lastly, he uses a torchlight to signal for help and fortunately was saved by emergency flood rescuers. He was sent to a community hall for flood relief as a temporary shelter.

Cutscenes Gallery

Gallery of the cutscenes asset. All 2D assets are drawn, coloured and arranged accordingly in layers to ease the animation process.

Notes: This is not all the assets included in the cutscenes. Only some assets are specifically placed in the gallery. All assets from cutscene are handdrawn and originally made. Please refer to video above to enjoy full cutscene experience.

UI/UX Design

The theme of the project is about flood. Emphasising that flood is a serious topic, I tried to create interface design that are visually attractive yet in a dull tone as flood is a solemn disaster. As the game is in 3D and VR, I had the idea to create a 3D main menu of the main character in front of his PC. Then it is processed on After Effects for extra glowing and raining loop background on the screen for the placement of the buttons. The button design imitates the look of flood, whereby the water level increases when hovered.

Marketing

Marketing for the project, Overflow. Created and posted social media content on Instagram and YouTube. Also, creating printed materials for exhibition such as the user warning and controller settings. Art of main character using a VR headset was drawn for marketing. Then, poster was designed.

Sound Design

Recorded voice over for dialogue in the game. I was in charge of the sound design for the gameplay. The audio are mixed and edited to match the game overall mood and atmosphere.

Additional Contributions

As the team leader of this project, I was highly responsible in planning, writing and researching the details thoroughly with my members. I also ensured that the team understood in consensus and was in the right direction. During the creation of this project, I have discussed and finalised the design of the project with my team members. Moreover, I created a game flow chart to properly understand the project's decision making process better.

As the project is in VR, it was difficult to achieve desirable results based on the planning. Hence, a lot of changes and compromising was needed to achieve this far. Most importantly, I have put my best foot forward towards the entirety of Overflow.
